چکیده

A mechanism for crystal-crystal phase transformations (PTs) via surface-induced virtual premelting is justified thermodynamically and confirmed experimentally for the PTs in PbTiO3 nanofibers. When the thickness of the surface melt (which appears much below the melting temperature, especially for nanoobjects) exceeds the size of the critical product nucleus, nucleation and growth of the product crystal occur. For nanowires, premelting starts near the smallest size, and hydrodynamic flow driven by reduction in the external surface leads to a large change in shape and further promotion of crystal-crystal PT. During the product crystal-growth stage, virtual melting is observed experimentally within the crystal-crystal interface.

Detection of Polymer Brushes developed via Single Crystal Growth

Single crystals consisting various surface morphologies and epitaxial structures were applied to investigate the effect of other phase regions in the vicinity of a given tethered chains-covered area having a certain molecular weight of amorphous brushes. The designed experiments demonstrated that regardless of the type of surface morphology (patterned and especial mixed-brushes, homo and co...

Crystal-amorphous and crystal-crystal phase transformations via virtual melting.

A new mechanism of crystal (c)-amorphous (a) and c-c phase transformations (PTs) and internal stress relaxation via virtual melting (VM) induced by internal stresses was justified thermodynamically and kinetically. VM removes interface friction, reduces kinetic barrier, increases atomic mobility, and can reduce thermodynamic melting temperature. We combine VM and nonequilibrium PT diagrams to d...

Hmx Polymorphism: Virtual Melting Growth Mechanism, Cluster-to-cluster Nucleation Mechanism and Physically Based Kinetics

A fully physically-based thermodynamic and kinetic model of the β ↔ δ phase transformation in energetic crystal HMX crystal embedded in polymeric binder is developed. It is based on a new nucleation mechanism via melt mediated nano-cluster transformation and the recently formulated growth mechanism via internal stress-induced virtual melting. During the nucleation, nano-sized clusters of β phas...

Melting and solidification of nanoparticles: Scale effects, thermally activated surface nucleation, and bistable states

Previously unknown phenomena, scale, and kinetic effects are revealed by introducing the finite width ξ of the particle-exterior interface as the additional scale parameter and thermally activated melting in the phase field approach. In addition to traditional continuous barrierless premelting and melting for ξ = 0, barrierless hysteretic jumplike premelting (melting) and thermally activated pr...

Premelting, fluctuations, and coarse-graining of water-ice interfaces.

Using statistical field theory supplemented with molecular dynamics simulations, we consider premelting on the surface of ice as a generic consequence of broken hydrogen bonds at the boundary between the condensed and gaseous phases. A procedure for coarse-graining molecular configurations onto a continuous scalar order parameter field is discussed, which provides a convenient representation of...
